Welcome, Dannyboy! Don't worry about the English, most of us just use plain old American!!!! (OK folks, pile on!)
Have you rejetted your carb to get rid of the backfiring? Do that and keep messing with the pilot screw. I found a happy medium somewhere between backfiring and flames shooting out the tail pipe!!!!
